Why do diesel vehicles get better mileage per gallon and does a diesel fuel additive help?
October 28, 2008 – 2:51 amLately, everyone is wishing that their car, truck or SUV got better gas mileage. We have the high price of gasoline and diesel to thank for that. The problem is that many vehicles that get great gas mileage have to sacrifice power and performance. It seems that there is a trade-off…good gas mileage or good power and performance.
You don’t have to chose between the two anymore. Even with the high price of fuel, more people are choosing diesel vehicles. Why are they choosing diesel vehicles? Diesel engines have the potential to get better gas mileage, better performance, more power and are often times more reliable than gasoline engines.
Gasoline engines have to work harder for the same amount of work than diesel engines do. Diesel fuel has approximately 147,000 BTUs of energy per gallon. Gasoline only has 125,000 BTUs of energy per gallon. As the energy from the fuel is converted into work by the engine, the gasoline engine requires more fuel than the diesel engine does.
The fuel injection system in a diesel engine is much more efficient than the fuel injection system in a gasoline engine. This is one of the main reasons why diesel engines get better gas mileage. Gasoline engines burn three times more fuel than diesel engines when idling.
In general, diesel vehicles get about 6-8 more miles per gallon than gasoline engines. Getting better gas mileage can easily outweigh the extra cost of buying a diesel engine. In other words, diesel vehicles do cost more initially. But, you will probably spend more on your gasoline engine because it isn’t as fuel efficient.
Diesel fuel is also much easier to refine than gasoline. Diesel fuel would be less expensive if there was more demand for it. Right now, diesel fuel loads are relatively small because there isn’t as much of a demand for it. If more people bought diesel vehicles, the price of diesel would go down dramatically and peoples’ vehicles would last them a lot longer.

There are so many benefits to diesel vehicles. Diesel cars, trucks and SUVs get better gas mileage than gasoline vehicles. Diesel vehicles also get much better power and an increased level of performance. If you are sick of not getting very good gas mileage, think about trading in your vehicle for a diesel one.
The other step that can be taken to enhance your diesel fuel performance is using a diesel fuel additive. Just like gasoline engines, diesel engines can respond well to fuel additives giving your wallet a rest because of the enhanced mileage per gallon.
