Safest Vehicles

December 1, 2008 – 4:27 pm
There are so many things to consider when purchasing a car.  Does it get good gas mileage?
Does it seat enough people?  Is it in good condition?  Is it going to last a long time?  Probably the most important thing to consider is if it is safe.
Insurance companies from around the country recently put together a helpful list of the safest vehicles on the road.  The industry named dozens of safe, new cars and trucks.  Ford and its subsidiary, Volvo, led the list of the safest vehicles.
Ford and Volvo continue to lead the list because of its increased use of technology…more specifically, anti-rollover technology.  Together, Ford and Volvo had 16 vehicles on the list.  There were seventy-two cars, trucks and SUVs on The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s list.  This is more than double the amount of cars on the 2008 list.  It was also three times the amount of cars as in 2007.
Following Ford and Volvo was Honda.  Honda Motor had 13 vehicles on the list.  Adrian Lund, the Institute’s president said, “The sheet number of this year’s winners indicates that automakers have made huge strides to improve crash protection.”
Vehicles are rated in terms of front protection, side protection and rear protection.  All of the vehicles are required to have electronic stability control.  ESC now comes standard on almost all new SUVs and over 75 percent of 2009 passenger cars.  One-third of all new pickups come with ESC as a standard option.
Ford had the Ford Fusion and the Mercury Milan out in front.  Both of these cars come with optional ESC.  Following were the Ford F-150, the Ford Edge, Ford Flex, the Ford Escape, and Mercury Mariner.  The Mazda Tribute was also featured on the list.
Ford’s CEO Alan Mulally said, “Every year, we’re going to improve the quality, we’re going to improve the fuel efficiency, we’re going to improve the safety, and we’re going to keep improving the productivity so we can offer the consumer the very best value.”
Apparently Ford is doing its job in offering continued safety options.  Ford has the safest vehicles on the road and will continue to do so throughout 2009.
