Getting Sneaky At the Pump

November 30, 2008 – 11:51 am
It is not an exaggeration to say that everyone wants to get better gas mileage.  This past summer, we all were paying extremely high prices for fuel.  Yet, Exxon Mobil is still making record-high profits.  Does that seem completely immoral to anyone else?  We are paying record-high gas prices while gas companies are making record profits.
Well, there are ways that you can get better gas mileage.  Don’t pay those fuel companies any more than you absolutely have to.  It’s all about getting sneaky at the pump.
1.  Smart Driving.  Driving sensibly can save you anywhere from $0.07 to $0.49 cents per gallon.  Accelerating too quickly, speeding and continuously braking are all ways to waste that precious (and expensive fuel).  Try to maintain a constant speed and stick to the speed limit.
2.  Replace the air filter.  It really pays to replace that old, dirty, clogged air filter.  Air filters cost a couple of dollars and take seconds to install.  A clean air filter can increase your gas mileage by 10 percent or anywhere from $0.15 to $0.32 cents per gallon.
3.  High-Octane Fuel.  Unless your car’s manufacturer recommends buying the high octane fuel, don’t buy it.  High octane fuel won’t increase your car’s overall performance but it will increase your gas budget.  Buying the regular unleaded fuel will save you $0.15 to $0.32 cents per gallon.
4.  Stick to the speed limit.  Speed limits are posted for a reason.  Speed limits don’t only keep us safe, they help get us better gas mileage.  Your gas mileage tends to decrease at speeds over 60 MPH.  Use your cruise control to help you maintain a constant speed.  This can help get you 10 cents more per gallon.
5.  Get rid of the weight.  Are you driving around with unnecessary weight?  Take out everything that you don’t absolutely have to have.  You will get anywhere from $0.03 to $0.06 more miles per gallon.
6.  Keep them inflated.  Keeping your tires properly inflated can really get you better gas mileage.  Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the proper inflation rate.  You can get up to 10 more cents per gallon.
7.  Recommended Oil.  You might as well save an additional $0.03 to $0.06 by using the recommended oil for you vehicle.
8.  Idling.  Sitting in traffic or driving through town all the time can be brutal to your gas mileage.  If you let your car idle for more than one minute, you are throwing money right out the window.  When you let your car idle, you are getting 0 MPH.
9.  Close it tight.  Gas can evaporate.  Make sure that your gas cap is screwed on and screwed on tightly.  This will prevent gas from evaporating.  You can save several gallons of gas each year this way.
10.  Make a plan.  Before going anywhere, make a plan.  Run all of your errands in one trip instead of running all over town every day.  Make a list of the places you need to go so you are sure not to forget anything.
Following these simple tips can increase your gas mileage drastically.  The savings are definitely worth the added plans to follow these tips.
